Layne Sheets, superintendent since 2021 at Jayton-Girard ISD, has been named assistant superintendent of secondary education at Frenship ISD, he told The Texas Spur. JGISD trustees accepted his resigation at their May 15 board meeting.
Dates for the transition are still being worked out, said Sheets, though the board voted to bring in retired administrator Johnny Tubb as interim superintendent within the coming weeks. Tubb served JGISD in that capacity during Jayton’s previous search, in 2021, after the departure of Trig Overbo.
Frenship, based in Wollforth, southwest of Lubbock, will be a significant leap for Sheets, who came to JGISD after serving as superintendent of the 152-student Dawson Independent School District in Welch, Texas. Frenship, with its multiple campuses and burgeoning population, currently counts some 11,000 students in its district, compared to JGISD’s total of 170 in all grades.
Sheets has been at JGISD two years, starting May 3, 2021. He and his wife, Hayley, a speech pathologist, have four children, Brynn, Martin, Ruby, and Boone.
A native of Muleshoe, Sheets earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University and his superintendent certification from West Texas A&M University.
His 15-year career as a teacher, coach and administrator has included schools in Slaton, Lubbock Estacado, Morton, Lubbock Coronado, and Jayton. During Sheet’s tenure at JGISD, the school district has made significant improvements to its campus and programming, due to ongoing, long-range plans and investments.
