At the January meeting of the Kent County Lions, the club learned about a service opportunity, “Children Can … with TLC” offered through Texas Lions Camp.
Camp director Beverly Ham and former district governor Terry Hawkins, both members from Lubbock shared how the camp in Kerrville normally serves 1,500 campers each summer and even though for the first time in 67 years, the camp did not take place onsite in 2020, some 1,100 campers did attend virtual camp.
Each summer eight specialized sessions are offered for children with physical disabilities, Down Syndrome, cancer, and type 1 diabetes. A variety of activities from crafts to swimming to horse riding to music and so much more are all dedicated to encourage kids to try something new and create friendships while developing confidence and independence.
Total cost for attendance is paid in full by the Lions of Texas.
Kent County has had youth attend in the past. For more information on how to be involved please contact any Lions Club member or visit lionscamp.com website.
