Kids’ letters to Santa: top wishes for Christmas 2023

It’s the most wonderful time . . . for schoolchildren across our newspaper coverage to once again put pencil to paper and let St. Nick know what they’d most like to see under their Christmas tree this December 25—or their hopes for world peace, family togetherness, and other wishes, whatever holiday they celebrate.

Tops on many lists this year—as any of you who went to movie theaters this summer might guess—are Barbie dolls and accessories.

As always, ride-on toys of all sizes make the lists of rural West Texas kids, from bicycles to full-fledged ATVs. Hot Wheels are multigenerational favorites.

“I am wishing for: an iPad, a PS5, a Lamborghini, a hoverboard and another head to be extra smart,” wrote one third-grader, whose correct spelling of that luxury car make we definitely applaud. No need for that other head, kid.

Squishmallows, video games, Paw Patrol toys, guitars. and American Girls dolls continue to rank high; Harry Potter merchandise always shows up on some kids’ lists; and in our rural and ranching counties, there’s generally someone hoping for a BB gun or other hunting-related equipment.

This year, NFL jerseys are a popular wish-list item—Mahomes,Kelce, and at least one Isiah Pacheco.

About those cell phones . . . Santa, we hope you have an extra-large supply of the new iPhone 15, because we’re seeing those on lists from every grade.

As for our own wish-list at the newspaper office—if we can’t get a few more hours added to deadline day each week in 2024, we’ll settle for happiness, health and prosperity for all of our readers in print and online, wherever you find yourselves reading this week’s issue.

And Mr. Claus—we wish you lots of enjoyable Season’s Readings as you prepare to pack your bags!
