Before the playoff game ever began, the tightly packed student section cheering for the Jayton Lady Jays belted out a chorus of “Fear the Flock,” and they weren’t kidding.
The Lady Jays, representing Jayton, a town with a population of 533, were not intimidated to play Crosbyton, a city of 1,800, in the bi-district playoff Monday night at Lubbock Roosevelt and easily cruised to a 50–23 victory.
The Lady Chieftains of Crosbyton were actually the first on the board, and jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the first minute of the game. It would be the last time Crosbyton would ever lead the score.
Showing the aggressiveness that earned them the District 5-1A championship, Jayton racked up 19 steals in the game, led by Daylee Chisum with six steals.
With Jayton blocking shots, stealing the ball, and aggressive shooting, including making three-pointers, Crosbyton lagged the entire game.
Jayton had three girls in double digits, led by Alana Croft, who scored 14 points, followed by Hannah Blankenship with 12 and Daylee Chisum with 10.
The bi-district victory brings Jayton’s record to 27–6 and they will play the area playoff game Thursday night versus Borden County at Lubbock Cooper at 6:00 p.m.
