LETTER TO THE EDITOR, THE TEXAS SPUR

DyessfamilyappreciatesSpurparkbeautification

Dear Texas Spur Editors, The article in the June 1 Texas Spur was enjoyed by our family. To show our appreciation for the work Myles Hammack and his students did at the Dyess Park to enhance the park’s entry point, we are sending a check to the “Dyess Park Project.” We hope this money will be used to continue the work for the beautification of Spur and the furthering education of SHS students.

A Brief History of the Beginning of Dyess Park

D.J. Dyess and his wife, Marie, lived in a home just to the south of the park and raised a family of four children there: Nell Dyess Sharp, Spur High School Class of ’45; Billy Dyess, Class of ’47; Betty Dyess Wyatt, Class of ’54; and Bob Dyess, Class of ’56. Nell and Bob are the last surviving members of the family. D.J. was a barber for 65 years in various shops in Spur. He and his wife and their kids also catered for different organizations in town.

It was common for D.J. to do his regular work all day, then work two or three more hours at the park. He hoed the weeds, planted flowers, fertilized and watered, all to beautify the park.

Our family appreciates the work Mr. Hammack and his students are doing in continuing a tradition our dad started long ago.

When ex-students come back to Spur for homecoming or to visit family, or are just passing through town, memories of where they grew up and their friends are all part of Dyess Park, the school and their home town.

Thank you for the article. Yours truly, Bob Dyess

Anyone wishing to contribute to the work of the park may make checks payable to Spur ISD, attn. Green House or Casa Verde.
