I have been an avid reader most of my adult life. When I hit my forties the perfect vision I had been blessed with my whole life decided it was time to move on. My reading habits changed drastically after that. Reading glasses helped to sharpen the blurred words, but I found that I didn’t enjoy reading as much as I used to.
Today’s technology has helped considerably. I find myself reading more ebooks and audiobooks. With ebooks I can read on my tablet and change the settings such as font size or brightness The library’s Overdrive is the first place I go to for reading material. Checking out a book on our Overdrive is free. Who doesn’t like free?
Another advantage of using the library’s Overdrive on my tablet is that it is open 24 hours a day, so it works with my schedule. I use it on the Libby app that I downloaded on my phone and tablet, but you can also access the library’s Overdrive using our advanced search on our website, http://spur. ploud.net.
Once you are at our website click advanced search and it will redirect you to our catalogue page. On this page you can log into your library account using your library card number and a password that we can provide to you. There are many things you can do on this page once you are logged in. You can change your password, update logged in. You can change your password, update your address, phone number or email address. You can renew your library card; which automatically expires after one year. You can search for and reserve a book that we have here at the library. Your search will tell you whether we have the physical copy of a material here at the library or if we have the ebook or audiobook available on our Overdrive.
On a recent trip to see my children in the Dallas area I downloaded the audiobook “Billy Summers” by Stephen King to read while I was driving. I have been a fan of Stephen King since I read the book “Carrie” in the 1970s. There have been a few of his works that I didn’t really care for, but for the most part I always enjoy a good Stephen King novel. Billy Summers was a decorated Iraqi war vet and one of the best snipers in his unit. He utilizes his skills back home and becomes one of the best hitmen for hire. Billy still has his own set of values and will only kill someone who is “really bad.” He has had enough of this life and ready to retire when he is offered a most generous payday for one last job. King holds true to his title of master storyteller in this unforgettable story of a good guy with a bad job. We do have the large print version of “Billy Summers” here at the library.
New board books are available for the little ones. We have the interactive “Spiderman: Never a Dull Day” from Marvel and “Paw Patrol: Look and Find.” We have a new copy of the Caldecott Medal–winning “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak.
