Spur library’s Summer Reading programs kick off June 6

DONNICE CARRUTH | SPECIAL TO THE TEXAS SPUR

It is hard to believe another school year is over. Congratulations to the graduating seniors from all of Dickens County. I know the seniors have probably all taken their ACT or SAT tests, but if anyone else needs to study for them we have 2022–23 study guides for both tests ordered for the library. We were able to obtain these study guides because of the funding from the Tocker Foundation grant we received in April.

A donation to the Friends of the Library was received in memory of Danny Reynolds. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this difficult time.

Our first day of the collaborative summer reading program will be Tuesday June 6, at 10 a.m.. The theme this year is “All Together Now” or “Todos Juntos Ahora.” We will have Mayor Louise Jones from the city of Spur as a very special guest speaker for the children on this day. The wonderful staff at the Spur Clinic will be here on Tuesday June 13 at 10 a.m. with a presentation for the children. The collaborative summer reading program is aimed at children ages 6 through 12, but children of all ages are welcome to attend.

The Friends of the Library is sponsoring a raffle for children ages 6-12 beginning June 6th and ending with a live Facebook drawing at 1 p.m. on June 29. The child with the winning ticket will receive an Amazon Fire HD8 Kids Pro Tablet with an 8” display. The children will receive one raffle ticket for each 10 books they read. We will be passing out reading logs beginning June 6. Be sure and get the filled in logs back to the library by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28. Any received after that time will be considered null and void. The more books they read the better their chance of winning. If you have any questions please contact me at the library at (806) 271-3714.

One of our more eclectic patrons recently checked out the large print western titled “The Fleecing of Fort Griffin” by Preston Lewis. He enjoyed it so much he left a note with the book when he returned it. He said, “Great book.NotjustaWestern, but a story with a surprise end. I encourage everyone to read it.” Later when I saw him he toldmeitwasoneofthebest books he had read in a long time. Anyone who loves to read knows this feeling. We can read many books that are ok or even good, but every once in a while there is one that is great.

Books that have been purchased thanks to the funding received from the grant from the Tocker Foundation have been steadily arriving at the library. Here are just a few of the titles we have added to our shelves. A favorite of our patrons is an author from Canyon, Texas. Jodi Thomas has captured the essence of west Texas. Her stories are centered on an area of Texas we all know. This seems to bring about a familiarity with her characters and writings that makes her readers feel like they are going to visit family. We received her newest book, “Strawberry Lane” this week and it was checked out before it ever reached the shelf. “Strawberry Lane” is set in a small Texas town where most families go back generations. It is here that four strangers meet and unite as they bury a father none of them has ever seen and begin slowly to piece together a bond that will not only change them, but the community for the better.

We also received Wrangler and Spur–award winning author Michael Zimmer’s “The Devil by His Horns” and “Winter Wolves: A Roamer Western” by William P. Mayo.

Check it all out at the library.
