Mayor launches summer reading program at Spur library

DONNICE CARRUTH | SPECIAL TO THE TEXAS SPUR

The first week of summer reading was a great success. We had a great turnout for Mayor Louise Jones’ presentation on our Collaborative Summer Reading program theme ‘All Together Now.”

Mayor Jones explained the working of city government to the children. She answered questions from the children. One of the young ladies asked if she was Spur’s first female mayor. Her answer was no—she is actually the city’s third female mayor. The children seemed to really enjoy being involved in the discussion. Next week we will host Spur Rural Health Clinic for their presentation. I’m sure the summer readers will be educated and entertained by the staff from the clinic.

The raffle for the Amazon Fire HD8 Kids Pro tablet started June 6 and goes through Wed., June 28 at 5:00 p.m. Then on Thursday June 29 at 1:00 p.m. we will have a live Facebook drawing for the tablet. The contest is open to children 6 through 12.

The way to receive a raffle ticket is to read 10 books and keep track of them on a reading log provided by the library. The more books you read – the more raffle tickets in the drawing. Bring your reading log to the library whenever you have reached 10 books and the staff will mark the page and give you a raffle ticket to fill out to put in the drawing.

Thanks to the Tocker Foundation funding recently received by the library, we have been adding quite a few new books to our shelves. New to the juvenile fiction section is “Chupacarter and the Haunted Piñata” by George Lopez and Ryan Calejo. World-famous entertainer George Lopez delivers a spooky tale of mystery, revenge, and friendship starring 12-year-old Jorge and Carter, the fearsome but friendly Chupacabra! Packed with clever illustrations, Chupacarter sees Jorge finally feeling at home in his new town, thanks to his awesome friends Liza and Ernie—and especially Carter, the chupacabra.

New to the large print section is New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci’s newest psychological thriller “Simply Lies,” in which two women—one a former detective, the other a dangerous con artist—go headto- head in an electrifying game of cat and mouse.
