DONNICE CARRUTH | SPECIAL TO THE TEXAS SPUR

Smith from the Spur Clinic did a wonderful presentation this past week during our collaborative summer reading program. They read to the children a couple of books they brought and donated to the library on the importance of not spreading germs and the importance of brushing your teeth.

These books are now in the children’s section of the library if anyone would like to check them out and read them to their children: “Pig in Jeans Fights Germs” by Brenda Li and “Why Do I need to Brush My Teeth?” by Caressa Simmons, RDH and illustrated by Summer Hao.

The volunteers also demonstrated how germs are spread and showed how an egg, brown from soaking in Dr Pepper soda for a few hours, could be made white again by brushing. The children participated and got to take home a new toothbrush.

The raffle for children ages 6 to 12 will be going on all month. Don’t forget to bring those reading logs to the library to get your raffle tickets! Every 10 books listed on the book log equals one raffle ticket. That means the more you read the better your chances are at winning the Amazon Fire HD8 Kids Pro tablet. The package includes: Black Fire HD8 (12th Gen. 2022 release) WiFi-enabled tablet, Cyber Sky Amazon Kid Friendly Case with stand, Amazon power adapter, USB-C (2.0) charging cable, built-in rechargeable battery, and 1 year Amazon Kids+ subscription. For more details call or come by the library.

We received more books to add to the shelves thanks to the grant received from the Tocker Foundation. We now have the latest study guide, dated 2023–24, for preparing for the U.S. citizenship test from Exam Pedia. This naturalization exam book is for all 100 USCIS civics questions and includes detailed content review.

Another study guide we received is Elissa Simon’s “GED Study Guide 2023 – 2024 All Subjects Exam Prep.” This study guide has over 800 math, science, social studies, and reasoning through language arts practice test questions.

A memoir by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, “The Choice: Embrace the Possible” was also added to our collection. Internationally acclaimed psychologist Dr. Edith Eger is one of the few remaining Holocaust survivors. She tells her unforgettable story in this moving testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of choice in our lives.

For fans of the television series “Yellowstone,” we have added the prequel to our DVD collection. Taylor Sheridan’s “1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story” follows the original Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It’s a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land – Montana.

Check it all out at the library.
