We have new books at the library courtesy of the grant monies received from the Tocker Foundation. Among our new titles are Barbara Kinsolver’s “Demon Copperhead,” winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize and winner of the women’s prize for fiction. Ron Charles of the Washington Post had this to say about it: “May be the best novel of 2022. . . . Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love.”
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, “Demon Copperhead” is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper- colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, “Demon” braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.
We have also added “Clive Cussler’s Fire Strike” by Mike Maden. Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the “Oregon” must battle an army of genetically engineered mercenaries to stop a hypersonic missile attack in this explosive new adventure in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, the Oregon Files.
“The Long Ago,” a novel by Michael McGarrity, tells the story of a soldier returning home from Vietnam in the early 1960s to search for his missing sister in this gripping story of broken lives and a search for happiness.
