LIBRARY NOTES

Craft Night returns to Spur Library Oct. 3

I guess I spoke too soon about summer being over. Hopefully we will have some honest to goodness fall weather soon.

We will be having a craft night at the library on Monday October 3rd from 5:30 pm until 7:30 p.m. We will be learning together on making a special kind of wreath. I am one of the hostesses of a baby shower coming up soon and have been practicing making a diaper wreath. I would love to share what I have learned with anyone interested in joining me.

You will need to bring some materials: (1) One 8” round wire wreath. I found mine at Family Dollar for $1.25. (2) A small package of size newborn or size 1 diapers. I just used the store brand from Dollar General. I have plenty of materials to attach the diapers to the wreaths, but if you want to decorate yours you can bring whatever you want to use.

If we have time we may try to make a diaper cake. If a diaper wreath is not anything you would be interested in, they also have a pumpkin wreath form at Family Dollar. I used one recently and came up with a cute fall wreath. We can also work on something like that one. If you have some fall artificial flowers and burlap ribbon bring those for the pumpkin wreath. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again. It’s been too long since we’ve had a craft night.

I wrote in an earlier column about my daughter inviting me to go with her to the Lubbock Book Festival because one of her favorite authors will be spotlighted at the event. I decided to read something by this author, and although my daughter and I have much different tastes in everything from clothing to reading materials I thoroughly enjoyed it enough to read the other two books in the series. We didn’t have anything by the author, Darynda Jones, in the library so I looked to our electronic source the Overdrive on my Libby app.

The series I enjoyed, the Sunshine Vicram series, is now available in large print at the library. The first one is “A Bad Day for Sunshine.” Another popular series by Jones has some supernatural aspects, but this one is more along the lines of small-town police, suspense, kidnappings, and high school bullies. The main characters are Sunshine Vicram, the newly elected sheriff of her hometown, Del Sol, New Mexico; her preteen daughter, Aura; and a town full of eccentric characters, including her high school crush she hasn’t seen since she left Del Sol after graduation.

Jones’ style is definitely not for everyone. Her books are laced with humor, heart and sometimes a little heat. The second book in the series is “A Bad Day for Chardonnay.” This one is also available in large print.

We also have recently added to our shelves a blockbuster new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lincoln Child. It’s centered on a dominant tech company, Chrysalis, whose groundbreaking virtual reality technology is redefining the way we live...and possibly introducing a catastrophic danger to the world.

From James Grippando we have “Twenty,” a Jack Swyteck novel. Swyteck and his family are caught in the crossfire after a deadly school shooting claims twenty casualties. Florida’s fifth mass shooting in as many years. This provocative and timely thriller touches on some of the most contentious issues roiling America today.

Check it all out at the library.
