LIBRARY NOTES

New books, new readers at the Spur library

The Friends of the Library will host a hamburger dinner fundraiser at the library on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. For a suggested donation of $10 per plate, you will get a hamburger, chips, drink and dessert. We will serve you at the library or you can get your dinner to go.

The Friends will also be selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle, with half of the proceeds going to the Friends of the Library and half to the winning ticket holder. The tickets will be one dollar each or six for five dollars. You can purchase your tickets from any member of the library board or at the library during normal business hours. For more information call the library at (806) 271-3714 Monday through Thursday from 12 noon until 5p.m.

On October 23, 2023 from 6 pm until 8:00 pm I will be attending the Book Launching Party for “In the Company of Cows” by Sequoia Branham at the Kent County Library in Jayton, Texas. Just over a year ago, Sequoia attended the writers’ workshop held at our library that was sponsored by the Tocker Foundation.

We have new books to add to our growing collection. These books were purchased with funding received with a grant from the Tocker Foundation. I have been trying to find the books we need to complete our collection from Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series. Virgin River follows Melinda “Mel” Monroe, who answers an ad to work as a midwife and nurse practitioner in the remote Northern California town of Virgin River, thinking it will be the perfect place to start fresh and leave her painful memories behind. But she soon discovers that small-town living isn't quite as simple as she expected.

Due to the popularity of Carr’s Virgin River series a television show based on the books premiered on Netflix in 2019. In May 2023, ahead of the fifth-season premiere, the series was renewed for a sixth season. We added several from the series to our collection including “A Virgin River Christmas,” “Forbidden Falls,” “ Angel’s Peak,” “Promise Canyon,” “Harvest Moon,” “Bring Me Home for Christmas,” “Hidden Summit,” “Redwood Bend,” “Sunrise Point,” and “Return to Virgin River.”

Check it all out at the library.
