LIBRARY NOTES

New books, new readers at the Spur library

The Friends of the Library’s hamburger supper fundraiser will be this Saturday, Oct. 21, from 5 until 7:30 p.m. at the library. For a suggested donation of $10, you will get a hamburger with all the fixings, chips, a drink and a dessert. With the added bonus, the Friends of the Library will do the dishes!

We will be having a 50/50 raffle drawing at the end of the evening, with the winning ticket holder sharing half of the money made from the sale of the tickets. The other half will go to the Friends of the Library.

The Friends of the Library is a non-profit, charitable group formed to support the library in our community. The Friends are made up of volunteers that work diligently to help keep the library a vital part of the community. The board of trustees works closely with the library’s governing body, which is the City of Spur. The Dickens County Spur Public Library’s operating expenses are funded by the City of Spur, the County of Dickens, and the board of trustees of the Friends of the Library. All three sources are needed to keep the library operating.

We are very fortunate to have a community that supports the library. Small rural communities, such as ours lack the resources of larger cities. By supporting your local library, you are helping your neighbor who might not be able to afford the luxuries that some of us take for granted such as computer usage and internet. We have several computers available for our citizens to use. This service is great for anything from seeking employment to printing out a return label, or making an appointment with DPS to renew a driver’s license.

Private foundations are another invaluable source of library funding. We are able to provide to our citizens reading materials that are current without them having to drive the 140-mile round trip to Lubbock. Working with funds received from the Tocker Foundation, we have added these current bestselling books to our collection. “Lion and Lamb” by James Patterson and Duane Swierczynsk which was released in August of this year. Veena Lion and Cooper Lamb are rival PIs in Philadelphia in this suspenseful hunt for a killer. Philadelphia is in a state of shock over the fate of two hometown heroes: Eagles starting quarterback Archie Hughes, and his even more famous wife, Grammy-winning singer Francine Hughes. Even before the case hits the courtroom, it’s the hottest ticket in town. For the defense: Cooper Lamb, private investigator to the stars. For the prosecution: Veena Lion, a sleuth so bright she’s got to wear shades. Between them, they know every secret in Philadelphia. Together, they prove how two wrongs can make a right. They are “Lion & Lamb.”

We also have “The Passenger,” a New York Times Best Book of the Year, from the late bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy. “The Passenger” is the story of a salvage diver, haunted by loss, afraid of the watery deep, pursued for a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longing for a death he cannot reconcile with God.

Check it all out at the library.
