The Dickens County- Spur Public Library along with the Dickens County Historical Commission would love to have you join us at the Library at 403 East Hill Street Spur, Texas, on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 4:00 pm for “A Dickens of an Evening” with author Barbara Brannon.
Enjoy local history legends of West Texas and swap stories of fact and fiction. There will be reading, refreshments, quizzes, and prizes. When it comes to local history, the citizens in Dickens County and bordering counties are some of the most knowledgeable. Most of the knowledge is passed down through the generations. The older generations have such an enthusiasm about sharing local history with newcomers that they too get caught up in the excitement. I have heard many a conversation begin with, ‘Did you know ‘, or ‘Have you ever heard about?’
Some of our transplants know more about local history than some that are second or third generation. One such transplant is our very own newspaper editor, Barbara Brannon. Brannon. Under the pen name Will Brandon, she has fused some of the knowledge of the area into her western series beginning with “The Wolf Hunt: A Tale of the Texas Badlands,” which received the Copper Medallion in the category of Western Mystery at the Will Rogers Medallion Awards. On the very first page there is a hand- drawn map of 1891 Dickens County Texas. The map includes area landmarks such as Soldiers Mound, Espuela, the city of Dickens and the area in which the mystery begins, the Croton Breaks.
The newest book in the series is “A Study in Crimson,” which is the prequel to “The Wolf Hunt” and will be available to purchase at the event. There will be limited seating so please RSVP to spur@TheTexasSpur. com or call the newspa- per office at (806) 271-3381.
From the estate of Laurie Murphy we have added many new DVDs to our shelves.
