Bill Gregory, who taught Vocational Agriculture at Spur schools from 1953 to 1979, was recently inducted posthumously into the 2022 Class of the Hall of Fame of the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas. The induction ceremony was held July 28 during the organization’s convention in Corpus Christi. According to Gregory’s daughter Betty Reding, Spur High class of 1963, Gregory taught a generation of Spur students, many of whom still live in Dickens County. “His teaching partner for his last 10 years was Kermit Wooley,” she said. “He mentored quite a few ag teachers. Texas Tech sent him a lot of student teachers to train.”
Reding said that one of Gregory’s proudest moments came near the end of his career when the Texas State FFA president was from Spur.
She observed, “My father definitely lived the FFA code.
He was dedicated to service. He served in the Spur Volunteer Fire Department for years and years as the fire marshal.”
Daughters of the late Bill Gregory are Billie Sue Gregory Park, Mary Ann (Cookie) Gregory and Elizabeth (Betty) Gregory Reding.
The Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas Hall of Fame recognizes and honors agricultural science teachers whose careers, achievements, and contributions stand exemplary. Inductees are known as well-rounded professionals that have proven their success with FFA activities, in the classroom, as well as community involvement. They have proven their desire to provide students with opportunities for premier leadership, personal growth and career success over a significant period of time.
