Mark your calendars for Meet and Greet the Author, Oct. 1

Another school year has started, which means 2021 Spur Homecoming will be here before you know it. The dates for homecoming are Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 30–Oct. 2.

On Friday, Oct. 1, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., the library will be hosting Homecoming Meet and Greet the Author. Published authors from Dickens County or who have ties to Dickens County will be there for you to meet. Some will have copies of their books for sale. We are very excited to be able to bring these folks together for our citizens to meet.

I have a newcomer for our list of published authors. She has just released her book, a devotional, “Knowing Your Identity.” Shelly (Parsons) Bratcher graduated from Spur with the class of 1990. I am excited to get to meet Shelly. I have only spoken to her on the phone and already I am a huge fan. You can see a video of her talking about the release of “Knowing Your Identity” on the Spur Ex-Student page on Facebook.

Another published author coming to our event is Jeanette Brown from the class of 1966. “The Illusion of Leaving” is Jeanette’s first novel and a must-read for anyone who ever hung out at Mac’s parking lot while in high school, honking at the cars going up and down Burlington.

You may not know our next author, Carl C. Williams, but you might know his wife. Alice (Crockett) Williams was in the 1954 Spur graduating class. Carl, a former Brewster County Sheriff, authored “More Than a Badge: Rough Country, the Law, & Me.” One of our patrons who has read it said it was a great read. He loved the flow of the book between job and family. He also liked reading about the evolution of the weapons. The photos used in the book are great as well. He told me usually books like this are a little boring, but not this one. He said he would highly recommend it.

If you have been reading The Texas Spur lately you may have been reading the excerpts from Will Brandon’s “The Wolf Hunt: A Tale of the Texas Badlands.” This Western novel set in the Croton Breaks of West Texas is also available at the library. Will Brandon will be at our event. Co-authors of The Paragraph Ranch Series, “The Paragraph Ranch” and “A Wedding at the Paragraph Ranch” Barbara Brannon and Kay Ellington will be here. Although not from Spur originally, they got here as soon as they could and now are editor and publisher of our local newspaper, The Texas Spur.

There will be a table set up displaying children’s books written by Dorothy McClellan and illustrated by our own local artist, Vicki Diggs.

Our new section of the library is finally here. The youth large print section is the newest section of the library. Three out of four teachers in a study said that students reading below grade level demonstrated better comprehension and retention with large print books. Four out of five teachers said large print benefits students who have issues tracking or lack self-confidence in reading. We have several new books in the collection. Among them are “The One and Only Bob,” a follow-up to Katherine Applegate’s “The One and Only Ivan,” which is available in regular print at the library.

“The Canyon’s Edge” by Dusti Bowling is a novel in verse about a young girl’s struggle for survival after a climbing trip with her father goes terribly wrong. These are just a couple of the many new books at the library thanks to the Texas Book Festival grant awarded to the library this month.

Check it all out at the Library!
