Mark your calendars for Oct. 1 at the Spur library

School has started back up and Friday night football is going strong, so where is fall? I guess it is waiting for the official date of fall, which is September 22nd. Hopefully by the time you are reading this fall will have arrived and the blistering heat will be over for a few more months. Cooler weather will be nice for homecoming this year.

The class of 1955 will be meeting at the library this year during homecoming. For more information contact Jean Sonnamaker at (806) 271-4490 or Merla Watson at (806) 271-4438. Also during homecoming this year, the Dickens County Spur Public Library will be hosting a Homecoming Meet and Greet. We have invited published authors who live in or have ties to Dickens County to join the homecoming festivities this year. We have several joining us on Friday October 1st from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Many will have books available for purchase. If you already have your own copy, bring it for an autograph. Refreshments will be served.

We have had more books donated to the library. Thank you to all who donate to the library. It’s because of the generosity of our community that we have a library such as ours. Our board of directors work hard to make sure the citizens of Dickens County don’t have to drive to larger cities just to be able to check out a book or have access to the internet. One of our hardest working members is Ineta Cannon. She is having some issues and could use an extra prayer from all of us. Get well soon, Ineta—we miss you at the library!

A few weeks ago Ineta asked me if we had or could get the book “Wild Pork and Watercress” by Barry Crump. She had recently seen a movie that was based on the book and thought the book would be a good read. Reviewers agree. It received a rating a 4.7 stars out of 5 stars on Amazon global reviews. One reviewer said, “Barry Crump is not only a story teller but a visionary. This is a story about the adventures and bush tramping of a confused Maori boy… Crump breathes life into the characters and you hate that the story ends.” This book is now available to check out at the library.

From the donated books we’ve added to our shelves there are two from bestselling author Catherine Coulter. The first one is a psychic thriller called “Knock Out.” Traveling with her mother to Georgia in the aftermath of her father’s death, seven-year-old telepath Autumn Backman discovers her own family’s murderous activities, desperately contacts FBI agent Dillon Savich, and promptly disappears, a situation for which Savich launches a large-scale manhunt.

Coulter teams up with fellow New York Times bestselling author J.T. Ellison in “The Last Second.” The Real Book Spy had this to say about it: “With their high-octane and suspenseful prose, Coulter and Ellison are a thriller writer’s dream team, and ‘The Last Second’ is some of their best work yet.”

From USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin, we have “Her Deadly Secrets.” A young private investigator learns the price of keeping deadly secrets when a vicious killer sets his sights on her in this pulse-pounding thriller. In Griffin’s Texas Murder Files we have book one, “Hidden,” in which an ambitious female reporter tracks a deadly threat in Austin, Texas. Also from Griffin is the spellbinding thriller full of twists and turns, “Touch of Red.”

From New York Times bestselling suspense master Dean Koontz we have “The Crooked Staircase” from the Jane Hawk series.

Check it all out at the library.
