Halloween can be a good time for staying in and making a fun night of it—especially if you are still a little leery of being around the public, with cases of Covid peaking again. A special dinner, with the kids in mind, and some celebratory snacks could be in order.
I’ve noticed some very inventive ideas, however, for safely sharing treats at the front door. I’ve seen pictures of chutes made out of PVC pipe coming down the front porch stairs, and other similar contraptions. We certainly are a creative society; not much seems to get us down.
If you do keep the kids in, throw together this colorful, sweet-’n’-salty mix made with puffed corn/rice (it’s called Pirate Booty on the chip aisle of the grocery store). Add to it your favorite Halloween candy, such as candy corn. And for a nutty, savory flavor, toss in some pumpkin seeds. Then after mixing it all with melted white chocolate or almond bark, add a few dashes of seasonalcolored sprinkles.
Please stay safe, and enjoy food made fresh!
Monster Mash
(Pirate Booty Halloween Mix)
10 cups corn/rice puffs (Pirate Booty)
1 cup candy corn
½ cup pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
11 or 12 ounces white chocolate chips, candy melts, or almond bark
2 tablespoons sprinkles
Place Pirate Booty puffs into a large mixing bowl. Add candy corn, and pumpkin seeds. Set aside.
Melt white chocolate chips, candy melts or almond bark in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave on high in 30 second intervals. Stir after each time, and stop microwaving when almost melted. Stir until smooth. Pour over the puffs, candy corn and pumpkin seeds. Fold in to coat the puffs mixture.
Top with sprinkles and gently stir to combine.
Pour mixture out on a baking sheet to let set. Once firm, store in an airtight container. Makes 11 to 12 cups.
