With only one week left in the filing period, incumbent filings have stepped up.

For Spur city council, Mayor Louise Jones has filed for reelection, and she is being challenged by David Crawford. All three incumbent aldermen have filed for reelection, and all three have opponents.

Incumbent Fronye Morris, Ward 1 is being challenged by Steve Bridges.

Don Wright, Ward 2, has an opponent, Tom Stout, and Rhea Melton, Ward 3 has drawn a challenger, Gayle Massaro.

Candidates who wish to file the documents required to run for these positions were able to do starting January 13, 2021, and the deadline to file is February 12, 2021. Election day for these positions is May 1, 2021.

City candidates may file the paperwork at the city halls of Dickens, Jayton and Spur.

At press time this week, outside of the Spur city council, only two city candidates had filed for elected office, both in the city of Dickens. Dickens Mayor David Warren had filed for reelection, and Marie Mullins had filed for her at-large alderman position. Mullins also serves as Dickens’ mayor pro tem, and all Dickens’ aldermen seats are at-large. On this year’s Dickens ballot are the mayor’s position and two aldermen seats, all atlarge positions.

On the city of Jayton ballot this year are the mayor’s seat and two council positions, but so far, no one has filed for office. All positions are at-large.

School board candidates for Spur ISD and JGISD may file at their respective school administrative offices. Patton Springs ISD holds a November election.

Spur ISD has single-member districts with board members serving three-year terms, and on the ballot this year are place 1 and place 2, currently represented by Pat Ortiz and Roy Sanchez respectively. Both have filed for re-election. In addition, Andrew Adams has filed to oppose Ortiz for place 1.

JGISD school board positions are at-large, and three positions are on the ballot. Those seats are currently held by Amanda McGee, L’Rae Lee and Cole Carpenter. None on the incumbents have filed at this point.

Lance Spray has filed to run for one of these at-large positions.
