Motley-Dickens Reunion & Rodeo Set for Aug. 23–25

OLD SETTLERS REUNION & RODEO in its 95th year will feature a parade, a rodeo, two dances, and more August 23–25, 2018.

The 95th annual Old Settlers Reunion & Rodeo begins Thursday, Aug. 23, in Roaring Springs, with free admission to the rodeo grounds all day. Concessions will be available on the grounds, which are located in the 900 block of 3rd St., Roaring Springs, Texas, 79256.

Thursday evening events

A business meeting will be held at 3 p.m. in the Tabernacle. Arena events begin with books open at 4:30 p.m. and events beginning at 5 p.m. The entry fee for cutting events is $150. All winners will receive a ranger buckle set by Spur crafter Clint Martin.

A flag race is $5 entry fee for 6 years and under; for 7-9 years, the entry fee is $10. Entrants in an open age barrel race, with an entry fee of $20, will win a buckle prize.

Junior team roping for 18 years and under will be a round robin, with an entry fee of $50 per team. Motley-Dickens Counties team roping, with an entry fee of $150, will begin with a draw for four partners.

Friday events

Admission to the rodeo grounds on Friday, Aug. 25, and Saturday, Aug. 26, is $10.00, with 12 years and under free.

On Friday, the Ranch Horse Association of America (RHAA) competition will open at 8 a.m., with competition beginning at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $175. Five classes of entrants will include Wrangler, Cowboy, Ranch Hand (to be determined), and Junior and Senior Classes. Entries must be received by August 20 with rodeo president Douglas Campbell by calling (806) 269-2659; or by mail at P.O. Box 185, Matador, Texas, 79244.

Saturday events

For the second year, the Horse and Float parade will take place Saturday rather than the traditional Thursday. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Following the parade, a memorial service will be held in the Tabernacle at 11 a.m. Bingo will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Tabernacle at $5 a card.

Ongoing events include a washer pitching contest at 1 p.m. Kids’ snapping turtle races begin at 2 p.m., with a $25 prize awarded in each age division of up to 4 years; 5-9 years; and 10-12 years. Books for the goat roping event open at 10 a.m..

The Number 11 team roping entry fee is $80 (no cap, four head, progressive after one. Books open at 12 noon.

Youth events Friday and Saturday

Other Friday and Saturday events taking place during the rodeo include a junior flag race each day for ages 12 and under; entry fee is $20; limit 10 participants.

Also, mutton busting will take place Friday and Saturday during the rodeo for ages 12 and under. Entry fee is $20; limit 10 participants.

New this year is the Junior Shetland bronc riding on Friday and Saturday, for age 12 years and under. Entry fee is $75.00; limit 10 participants.

WRCA-sanctioned Ranch Rodeo Invitational

The Ranch Rodeo Invitational will begin at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Events will include bronc riding, wild cow milking, team doctoring, calf branding, and team sorting. Teams will consist of four to six members; four monies will be paid. Five members of the winning team will receive awards, with bits to Top Hand and Top Horse. Further, a drawing for handmade prizes will be held on Saturday during the eodeo. First place will spurs by Matt Humphreys; 2nd place, ranger buckles made by Clint Martin third place, trinket by Matt Humphreys. Tickets are $5 each, or 5 tickets for $20.

Llano Bateman, son of Marci NS Travis Bateman of Dickens, and Brody Rankin, son of Lacy Parks Rankin of Roaring Springs, have been awarded Mike Jones Memorial Scholarships and will be honored during the Saturday night performance, August 25th.

Friday and Saturday entertainment

The Chad Maines Band will play for free at Old Folks’ Dances from 5 to 7:30 p.m. nightly on Friday and Saturday. Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys will play for a Friday and Saturday dance starting at 9:00. Admission to dances is $10.

Matador Ranch Cowboy Reunion

The Matador Ranch Cowboy Reunion will be held Saturday from 1 to 3:00 pm at El Matador Lodge, off Texas Highway 70 south of Matador. For more information, call (806) 347-2600.
