A Jayton native has been
named the new chief executive officer of Aspermont-based Stonewall Memorial Hospital District, the parent company of the medical clinics in Spur and Jayton.
Michael Moorhouse, a 1986 graduate of JGISD, will now head up SMHD after working in the medical profession across the globe.
Moorhouse, who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and a master’s in health administration, has a quarter of a century of experience in the medical profession, including nursing, supervision of an ambulance program, and medical administration in locations ranging from Aspermont to Abilene to Arkansas and South Carolina, India and Africa.
He described his decision to come back to West Texas. “For the past couple of years, we have wanted to come back home. We have parents and grandchildren in the area and wanted to be closer to them,” he said.
The new CEO said he is really excited to work with “a fantastic staff” and to be part of “fantastic communities.”
“Many of the nurses come from larger hospitals and have chosen to be here,” he said, also emphasizing that the hospital district has “a great nurse-to-patient ratio.” Moorhouse emphasized the vital role that SMHD plays in this area. “We take care of a lot of people from around here, in our ER and in our swing beds. We are necessary for the communities around here. If it were not for us, many people would not get the care they need.”
Future plans for SMHD, according to Moorhouse, include improvements to the physical plant. “We are adding a lobby for the clinic in Aspermont, so that people have a place to wait when they go to see the nurse practitioners. We are repainting patient rooms and working hard to make the hospital look its best.” Moorhouse concluded by saying, “This is place I plan to take my family and the place that I will get care from when I retire.”
