Spur resident Joan Day, with the help of her husband, Leo, gave the children of Dickens County a special treat at the Library during the Collaborative Summer Reading Program themed ‘Tails and Tales.’
She introduced the children to Toto, her rescue dog, and told them how she rescued her from abuse. Then there was her guinea pig, which liked to hide from everyone. She informed the children that if you have a pet you have to know how to care for it. She also brought a goldfish, a duck, some kittens, and a dancing parrot named Squeak.
The last animal Joan had for them to see was a tiny horse with a baby. She told the children the baby didn’t have a name yet and they could help name him. Each child put their choice for a name in a bowl, and the name drawn out was the name picked by Marissa Neufeld. Now the baby’s name is Spot, which fit the white horse with brown spots quite nicely.
Also, don’t forget to bring your child to the library throughout the summer to check out books for the summer reading contest. For every 10 books they read (or if they are too young to read, that you read to them), they can choose a prize from the treasure chest and get their name entered for the grand prize drawing that will be held Tuesday, August 10, after the last summer reading program with Chris Espinosa.
Prizes have been made possible by donations by Dickens County Farm Bureau and Diversions Arcade of Spur. Pick up the “Tails and Tales” booklist reading records at the library to keep track of the books they read.
We have a couple of new books for young patrongs to add to their reading list. From the critically acclaimed early reader series Fox and Chick, we have “The Sleepover” by Sergio Russier. We also have an honest story about growing up with a name that is unfamiliar to the kids around you, told with humor and heart by critically acclaimed author/illustrator Thao Lam.
Due to Monday, July 5, being a holiday, Craft Night will be held Tuesday, July 6 at 5:30 p.m. We will be doing rock painting. It will be a fun night for all, so please make plans to join us. I have been practicing and have brought a few of the rocks I have painted up to the library if you want to see them.
