The Dickens County Spur Public Library is proud to be hosting a Homecoming Meet and Greet this fall.
Since Spur is known for having great homecoming celebrations with and a big turnout of visitors, the library has decided to join the activities by hosting this event. We already have several published authors who either live in Dickens County or have ties to Dickens County lined up to meet and greet you at the library on Friday, October 1, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. We have some who live right here in Dickens County and one who lives in Knoxville, Tennessee. We will have more information for you closer to homecoming.
Don’t forget to bring your children to see Chris Espinosa from the Texas Commission on the Arts Tuesday, August 10, that 10:00 a.m. for his interactive improvisational storytelling program.
Those of you who haven’t filled out a form to get your schoolaged children who attend school in Dickens County school supplies from our annual school supply drive, have until Monday August 9 at 5:00 p.m. to get them turned in. Any student who attends Spur ISD or Patton Springs ISD, or is homeschooled in Dickens County is eligible to receive part or all of their school supplies from this drive.
If you have driven by the library lately you may have noticed how much nicer it is looking. We have had a few people volunteering to help out. Eve N Adam from Facebook cleaned up outside a couple of weeks ago. I’m sorry I don’t know their last name to thank them properly. From what I hear they have been helping out all over town. It’s great to have people in the community who want to make it better by volunteering their time. John Schmidt, president of our library board, has been working alongside volunteers Bucky Phelps and the one person who has made my time there so much easier, my husband Tommy. Thank you to everyone who volunteers their time to help those in their community.
SHS alum from the class of 1960 Jett Conner heard that we would like to have some of his publications for our Hometown corner of the library. Last week we received a package from him with three of his latest books with a nice note. He autographed each one for the library. If you are a history buff you might want to check one of them out. They are “John Adams Vs. Thomas Paine: Rival Plans for the Early Republic,” “Thomas Paine: A Brief History of the Times That Tried Men’s Souls,” and “Captain Benjamin Bonneville’s Wyoming Expedition: The Lost 1833 Report.” Mr. Conner has an invitation to attend our Homecoming Meet and Greet event. We would love to thank him in person for his generous donation.
Also new to the library is John Grisham’s “Sooley.” Grisham takes you to a different kind of court in his first basketball novel.
Thanks to our grant from the Tocker Foundation we have some new large print western novels. From William W. And J.A. Johnstone we have “The Wicked Die Twice,” from Edward Massey we have “Founding Sheriff,” from John Shirley we have “Ralph Compton: Prairie Fire Kansas” and from Michael R. Ritt we have “The Sons of Philo Gaines.”
In our juvenile biography section we have “Zion Unmatched.” An extraordinary, deeply inspirational photo essay follows elite wheelchair racer and Netflix documentary star Zion Clark on his quest for Paralympic gold.
Check it all out at the library.
