The Texas Book Festival and the Texas Library Association have selected Dickens County Spur Public Library as a 2021 Texas Book Festival $1,500 Collections Enhancement Grant recipient.
Since the Texas Book Festival’s founding in 1995, it has been a part of the organization’s mission to promote literacy and support Texas libraries. Each year, funds raised at the annual Texas Book Festival support grants that are distributed to libraries across Texas the following year. Since 1996, the organization has funded 1,305 grants totaling over $3 million to 600+ libraries in every corner of the state.
The Texas Book Festival awards grants to support collection enhancement for Texas public libraries. This funding enables libraries to share the diversity and breadth of literature with their entire communities. Funding comes from book sales at the Texas Book Festival and other generous donors. We are proud and honored to receive this award. With this grant we will be adding new books to our children’s section, the new release section, the audio book section and a new section we will be adding, the children’s large print section.
Those of you who love reading the latest by New York Times bestselling authors will be pleased with a selection of hardcover and audio books by authors such as James Patterson, Brad Thor, Nora Roberts and many more. We will also be adding a selection of large print books for readers in middle school and high school. Studies have shown that large print improves reading experiences, academic outcomes, and cognitive health by increasing reading fluency and comprehension. These new materials will be added within the next few weeks to the library’s collection.
Already added to the library’s collection is a graphic novel based on one of the books in the Babysitters Club series by Ann M. Martin. “Claudia and the New Girl” is adapted by newcomer illustrator Gloria Epstein. Award-winning author Elana K. Arnold returns with an unforgettable story of the strange, wondrous threads that run between all of us, whether we know they’re there or not in her children’s fiction, “The House That Wasn’t There.” Also for the youngsters we have two Geronimo Stilton adventures, “Ghost Pirate Treasure (Creepella Von Cacklefur)” and “The Treasure of Easter Island.”
For those a little more advanced in their reading we have “Murder in Paradise” by James Patterson. Jodi Thomas brings us her newest with “Picnic in Someday Valley.” If a good suspense novel is on your list you might want to check out “Night Film” by New York Times bestselling author Marisha Pessl.
There is still time to get free school supplies from the library. If you haven’t filled out a form to get your child’s school supplies, just come to the library. If your high school student finds out at open house they need supplies that were not on the supplied lists, please let us know and we will do our best to help you get those as well. All Dickens County students can get free supplies at the library. We just need you to fill out the form so we know what we need to get. This includes Spur ISD, Patton Springs ISD, and students that are homeschooled in Dickens County.
