In the last few weeks or so you may have noticed on social media a young man selling books to help himself through school. He stopped into the library one day and I got to meet him. His name is Nikita Vlassenkov, or as he is known on Facebook, Nikita Bookman Vlassenkov.
Nikita is from Tallinn, Estonia. We had a very pleasant conversation about his home and about the books he was selling. I bought a couple of sets for the library. I was impressed with the quality of the books as well as the content. The first two books, “My Fun with Words: A-K” and “My Fun with Words: L-Z” is an encyclopedia for children. They are colorful and filled with definitions of words and pictures the little ones will enjoy. The second set consists of “My Book of Colors: Mi Libro de los Colores,” “My Book of Shapes: Mi Libro de las Formas,” “My Book of Words: Mi Libro de las Palabras,” and “My Book of Numbers: Mi Libro de los Numeros.” These colorful picture books are in both English and Spanish. One of our homeschool parents has checked one of these out and said they really like the way it is presented.
New this week in contemporary Christian fiction is Karen Kingsbury’s “When We Were Young.” In the style of “A Christmas Carol,” “When We Were Young” is a rare and beautiful love story that takes place in a single day. It’s about the gift of knowing what tomorrow will bring if you really walk out that door today. In historical Christian Fiction we have “Waves of Mercy” by Lynn Austin.
From New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewel we have “Then She Was Gone,” a novel that delves into the lingering aftermath of a young girl’s disappearance. Also a New York Times bestselling author is Iris Johansen’s “Bullet,” in which a woman finally gets her happily-ever-after ending with the man she loves until a woman on the run shows up on her doorstep with enough secrets to get them all killed.
