New books, new readers at the Spur library

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Let the Friends of the Library do the cooking and join us at the library for chili, hot dogs, fellowship and door prizes.

For a $10 donation you will get a meal with dessert and a drink. Some of the food supplies and door prizes are courtesy of our generous local merchants. A special thank you goes out to Lawrence Brothers Grocery, Spur Hardware, and Dana’s Pharmacy, just to name a few. We look forward to seeing old friends and new.

If you have stopped by the library this past week or driven by after dark, you may have noticed we have a visitor. Disney’s Mickey Mouse has graced us with his presence for a short time, awaiting a permanent home with one lucky ticket holder. The Friends of the Library will be selling raffle tickets for the giant 9-foot tall Mickey Mouse inflatable Christmas yard decoration. The prize is courtesy of Gemmy Industries. The tickets are $1 each or six for $5. You can purchase them at the library or from any library board member. The tickets will also be for sale at the annual Late Night Shopping on December 2 at the community center. The drawing will be held near the end of Late Night Shopping. You do not need to be present to win.

I was invited last weekend to attend the Flower Mound High School Marching Band’s sendoff to state 5A competition. My grandson, Carter Mulkey, is a senior at Flower Mound. He plays trumpet in the band and has had some great experiences. Last year they got to march and play in the annual Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. On the same trip they got to march and play at Disneyland in Anaheim. The show the band performed that night and at state competition (they placed 4th, by the way) was tailor-made for this grandmother, who is also a librarian: “What Dr. Seuss’ Interpretation of a Marching Band Might Be.” The show was fantastic. The students wore Seuss–inspired uniforms in turquoise and white with tall orange pompoms on their hats, and even though they must have been exhausted from all of the practices they looked like they were having fun.

I got to finish the audiobook I had been reading on my trip, “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarity. I enjoyed the book so much I purchased the library a copy of the softcover book. I also picked up something for our young adult fans of the “Divergent” series by New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth. “Four: A Divergent Collection” is a companion volume to the series, which includes scenes from “Divergent” as told from Tobias’s point of view.

Check it all out at the library.
