Spur’s annual Late Night Shopping turned out quite a crowd this year. It was good to see all of the familiar faces going from booth to booth checking out the vendors’ wares. Everyone was looking for stocking stuffers, Christmas gifts for loved ones, or something good to eat or drink.
The Friends of the Library held their fundraising raffle and at the close of Late Night Shopping. A little girl with pigtails named Jessica drew out the winning ticket of Ruth Pankey of Coweta, Oklahoma, for the 9’ Giant Mickey Mouse inflatable yard decoration. Congratulations to Ruth, and thank you to everyone who purchased tickets or made a donation.
With temperatures in the upper ’70s and into the ’80s lately it is hard to believe Christmas is just around the corner. The library has gotten into the Christmas spirit and has been putting out decorations this past week. Many of our Christmas DVDs and books are on display to get you into the Christmas spirit.
New books this week include “Mercy” by David Baldacci. FBI Agent Atlee Pine’s harrowing search for her long-lost sister Mercy reaches a boiling point in this breakneck thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author.
New to our youth section are numbers 6 and 7 in S. J. Dahlstrom’s Wilder Good series. In “Silverbelly,” Wilder is back on his grandad’s ranch in West Texas, and a run-in with his dangerous neighbor, Saul, spins Wilder’s head like the blizzard that hits the ranch the day before Thanksgiving. Along with his sister, Molly, Wilder must rethink his ideas about what a trophy is, and how he relates to the wild landscape around him.
Number 7 is “Cow Boyhood.” Thirteen-year-old Wilder has spent his boyhood watching men like his grandpa Papa Milam and wanting to be like them. Now he is leaving on a two day cattle drive through river and canyon country with his aging Papa and another older man, Red Guffey. In big ranch country full of livestock and wild animals, Wilder is forced to recognize that his own instincts and abilities may have become greater than those of his heroes.
