Recently the library was gifted with a bit of Dickens County history in the form of a book titled “The Austin Boys Band: A Bit of Dickens County Texas Music History.” It was presented to the library by one of the “Austin Gals,” Ann Austin Walker, and signed by both her and coauthor, Duffy Austin Wilks.
The family of musicians was led by Stephen Austin, an Illinois farmer and former private in the Union Army who moved to Dickens County in 1891. Stephen helped set up the town of Dickens, and in 1899 was a member of the first Dickens County commissioners court. The book will be featured in our hometown corner and available for anyone interested in local history to look through.
After reading the article in last week’s Texas Spur about former Spur resident Jeanette Brown being one of the authors published in the ghost-story anthology, “23 Tales: Appalachian Ghost Stories, Legends & Other Mysteries” I ordered a copy for the library. It will be displayed alongside her novel “The Illusion of Leaving” in the hometown corner of the library.
