Highway 70 Church of Christ
Guy Lowe has been named the new preaching minister at the Highway 70 Church of Christ in Spur.
Lowe has been a minister for 25 years in Texas, Oklahoma, New York and Wisconsin. He said that about 12 years ago, he filled in and preached in Spur, and he really liked it then. When the recent opening to be the minister at Highway 70 Church of Christ came about, he was happy to pursue it.
A native of Coleman, Texas, Lowe said the idea of a small-town church really appealed to him. He received his education at Sunset Bible Institute in Lubbock, where he earned a bachelor’s degree.
Lowe’s wife, Tracy, will also be employed in Spur, as the new business teacher at Spur High School and Junior High. The couple have a daughter, Sabra, who is 26 and planning to move to Spur and open a mobile pet grooming business. Sabra, as many in the Highway 70 church community already know, un fortunately broke her ankle in a fall earlier this month and underwent surgery this week to repair broken bones.
“Tracy and I are looking forward to getting to know the community,” Lowe said. “We like to show the love of Jesus through actions. We like to help those in needs, like widows and the homeless.”
He was pleased to have had the opportunity to work in the Spur Food Bank the day he talked with The Texas Spur.
He said that he and his wife have always had a non-profit, and that they like to put together those with needs, for example, widows who might need their yards mowed with those who can help them.
The Lowes have been in Spur for about two weeks.
Spur First United Methodist Church
Marc Espinosa of Tulia has been named the new minister at First United Methodist Church in Spur.
The Texas Spur caught up with Espinosa via phone. The 20-year-old said this was his first church assignment. Espinosa is a pastor’s son who moved a lot growing up, living in Lamesa, Coahoma, Lubbock, Olton and Tulia.
He attended West Texas A&M and majored in psychology, but felt called to pursue the ministry instead. “For a very long time, I have had ministry in my heart, and I am thankful for this opportunity.”
Espinosa said that the first thing he planned to do when he arrived in Spur was to get oriented with the people here and learn the culture.
He’s single, but he’s not coming alone. He’s bringing Champ, his full-blooded boxer dog, with him. In his free time, his primary hobby is music. “I grew up in a very musical family,” he said, “I play guitar, bass, piano and drums. In fact, I am working on building out my own studio.”
In closing Espinosa said he would like the people of Spur to know “I will do my very best to minister to them.”
His first sermon in Spur will be Sunday, Aug. 7.
