Observations from a delivery driver

• Carrying a 35-lb. bucket of kitty litter up three flights of apartment stairs makes me loathe cats even more (except barn cats, which have a valid purpose)

• Carrying three bottles of wine, candles, fresh flowers, fresh vegetables, and a brisket up three flights of apartment stairs is a reminder that romance is alive and well

• Purchasing wine for the first time has introduced me to wonderfully creative labeling (19 Cell Block Red, Chicken Run Red, Smoking Loon Merlot, Frog’s Leap Cabernet)

• Declining a guy’s early morning request for smokes and, uh, a package of intimate items will always be the right call

• Not declining a lady’s afternoon snack order of a gourmet ice cream sandwich from ritzy downtown Austin, keeping it insulated for the 15-minute drive to her place, paying for downtown parking but only getting a $2 tip is a mistake that will not happen again

• Dieting while doing food deliveries is a test of faith

• Unloading bags of groceries while sometimes making five or six trips to the porch is good exercise

• Unloading those groceries on porches with beautiful potted plants and flowers makes me forget how badly my knees hurt

• Unloading at places where the family leaves snacks and ice water for delivery drivers restores faith in humanity

• Getting certain handdigit gestures for making some quick lane changes on Loop 289 or Mopac may be understandable but not appreciated

• McDonald’s, the Soup Peddler, Whataburger, Juice-Land, Starbucks, Waterloo Ice House, Blue Sky Texas, H-E-B, and many more-—I am driving, delivering, and discovering new neighborhoods in Lubbock and Austin. It is, at least for me, delightful.
