Organizers expect at least 30 yard sales along Highway 70 Saturday

As of Monday, 20 yard sales have been reserved for the Spur, Dickens and Jayton areas for the Highway 70 Yard Sale on Saturday, May 7, according to coordinator Joan Day. Day said she anticipates Shane Jones from the Variety Store in Matador to have at least 10 more sales reserved in the northern part of the Highway 70 Yard Sale.

“I expect at least 30 sales, but that number will grow,” Day said.

Since the 2000s the Highway 70 Yard Sale, featuring stops along the route from Jayton to Turkey, has been on everyone’s event calendar in this region. Local coordinator Joan Day has personally worked with the event since 2010.

To sign up to get on the list of sales please contact Day at (806) 269-3141 if you will be having a sale south of US 82, or Shane Jones at (940) 475-0226 if you will be having a sale north of US 82, and one of them will get your name and address added to the list.

There is a fee of $10 per vendor to help cover costs of advertising. The last day to get on the vendors’ list is Thursday, May 5.

The list of vendors by town will be posted on Facebook pages, including The Texas Spur’s, on Friday morning.

As a buyer, please remember to have small bills. A vendor cannot leave their sale to go get you change and cannot anticipate the number of buys that may have $20 bills for a 25-cent item. To be a considerate shopper, have change and small bills for shopping.

Sunday is Mother’s Day, and you and your mom may want to make a day of shopping, finding treasures in each of the Highway 70 Yard Sale towns. Starting early may require that you need a place to stay if you are coming in from out of town. There are rooms still available at the Back Door Inn in Spur (call 806-271-4780 for reservations for your Friday night stay or relax after a full day of shopping by staying Saturday night).

In Spur there is also the Mesquite Inn, (806) 422-0942, and in Dickens the Double H Motel, (806) 623-5512. In Turkey there is Hotel Turkey, (806) 423-1151, and in Matador, Hotel Matador at (806) 347-2939.
