The Dickens County Historical Commission has been approved for a $5,000 grant for the Palace Theater from the Community Foundation of West Texas.
According to DCHC chair Harry Bob Martin the grant will be used to install a new ceiling for the theater. During restoration of the Palace the 1929 ceiling was taken out and never replaced.
Consequently, during cold and hot months, the Palace has not been able to show movies in a comfortabletemperature environment.
The movie theater’s season has been running from late May until early November.
Martin said that by using volunteer and internal assistance the $5,000 should cover all repairs needed for the ceiling.
He said he hoped to have the ceiling repaired in the next couple of months.
The grant process from the Community Foundation of West Texas is a competitive process and selection is based upon how much a project benefits a community.
