Winter weather may have delayed the 2022 season at Spur’s Palace Theater, but viewers coming to enjoy “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story” this Friday night, March 4, should find a warm welcome on many fronts.
The Dickens County Historical Commission, which manages the historic theater, has been working diligently since last fall to plan a lineup of movies, live shows and other events that will all benefit from an enhanced sound system. Projectionist Jerry Bilberry, after meeting with audio-visual staff at Spur ISD in February, installed upgraded speakers in a number of locations in the movie house and last week tested out acoustic improvements.
Also, the group purchased a hot dog grill that will provide a pre-show meal that’s easy on the budget: just $5 will buy a hot dog, chips, and drink, starting at 6 p.m. before the 7 p.m. movie showing. All proceeds benefit ongoing work on the the ater, which has also received a $12,000 Texas Humanities Relief Grant to support programming and promotions in its 2022 season.
One of those promotional expenses is the new “Coming Soon” poster in the Palace’s front window, a traditional touch that brings back a Hollywood flair to the 1929 theater. Each month posters will be changed out to reflect more of the upcoming season—as “one-sheeters” have done for generations.

The film centers on Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player — but just when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only with the support of his wife, Brenda (Anna Paquin) and the encouragement of his family, coaches, and teammates that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he already is.” (IMDB.COM)
Members of the DCHC screened the film last week and enjoyed it immensely. Terrific performances were delivered by all the performers (including Dennis Quaid as legendary coach Dick Vermeil), and the film included memorable moments from the days when the 2022 Super Bowl winning Rams played in a whole different city.
