It was a long, dry season in the movie industry before the writers’ strike finally ended this fall—but a dearth of suitable family-friendly new movies to show at Spur’s Palace Theater wasn’t the only roadblock to Saturday evening entertainments in Dickens County.
Unpredictable heating and cooling have long been a challenge in the historic 1929 movie house. But the volunteers of the Dickens County Historical Commission have set a goal for updating the building’s mechanical systems.
While replacement of thirty-year-old rooftop air conditioners will be a big challenge, friends of the Palace have always risen to the occasion!
This November, supporters including South Plains Electric Cooperative and numerous individuals, raised more than $1,000 toward that fund. (The exact total isn’t known yet, as checks dated as of 11/28/23 continue to roll in.) The matching percentage from the Community Foundation of West Texas will be determined by allocation of all donations in the area throughout the campaign.
Be sure to visit the Palace Theater on Saturday, Dec. 16, for Santa’s arrival— and enjoy music of the season through the theater’s recently installed sound system.
DCHC members are already hard at work on a schedule of events for 2024.
