Juan Salas will be the new football coach at Patton Springs with the new school year.
A graduate of New Mexico State University, he comes to the head football coach position at Patton Springs from Amherst, Texas, where he was the assistant football coach and head track coach for three years.
Prior to Amherst he had a coaching position with Mesilla Valley Christian School in New Mexico, a team which played 8-man football. Amherst plays 6-man football.
Salas said he was attracted to Patton Springs because he knew former coach Eric Johnson, who, he said, was also a veteran. Salas served in the Army for eight years before he attended New Mexico State and earned his degree.
As for the Patton Springs Rangers, he said, “I have seen a lot of film on Patton Springs. They never have a lot of players, but the ones they do have work hard. And that’s why I chose Patton. They work hard.”
For the upcoming year, Salas said Patton has have nine or 10 kids interested in playing football.
Salas is married and has four children. His wife, Andria, will teach 4th grade and will be the cheer sponsor.
The Salas’ four children are Juan Salas III, who will be a senior; Jocelyn Rae, who will be an 8th grader; Matthew, who will be a 4th grader ;and Nina Grace, who will be in pre-K.
“All of my kids will be in all of the sports and be as involved as they can be,” Salas said. “We want to be a part of everything.”
