Play ball! Jayton to add baseball, softball to sports lineup

A group of Jayton-Girard ISD supporters had pitched the idea to the school board this spring, and at the board’s regular meeting June 27 they won the day on a 5-2 vote: Jayton will step up to the plate next year with baseball and softball in its athletics lineup.

“The board voted last night to approve adding baseball and softball, said JGISD superintendent Layne Sheets. “We will start working on details as of what exactly it could look like but probably will include playing an away schedule the first season (this next year).”

Jayton parent Tiffany Ham said, “I am so thankful that the school board is giving the kids the opportunity to play and shine.” Although Ham feels it was “a long process and difficult decision for them to make, she expressed that “for the sake of the kids and the growing budget deficit, they made the right decision for the school and community.”

Sheets said he hopes the plan “will provide a positive opportunity for our students at Jayton to continue to be successful in extra curricular activities and in this case a new sport. We are fortunate here at Jayton to have great kids and a supportive community.”

Ham sees both an upside and a challenge. “Now the goal is to make both the baseball and softball programs super successful.”
