Porcupine avoidance training set for Oct. 21

A “Porcupine Avoidance Training” for dogs will be held at the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch between Roby and Snyder on Saturday, October 21 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Dr. Dale Rollins, director of outreach at the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch, said the training will benefit hunting dogs by creating an “aversion” to porcupines so that a dog will learn to avoid them.

“If you have ever had a dog tangle with a porcupine, you know that the porcupine always wins,” said Rollins in a press release. “You are left with a badly injured dog and it is a painful and costly experience to havequillsremovedfrom a dog’s mouth and face.” “Benjamin Franklin once said that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ “We do not guarantee this will work for all dogs, but we hope it may save some from a painful experience,” he said.

If you are interested in enrolling your dog in the training, the groups ask that you call or email Dana Wright at dwright@quailresearch. org or (806) 346-7409 to schedule a time to bring your dog(s) between 8 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 21. A limited number of slots are available; the cost will be $25 per dog.

The event will be held at the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch, located 11 miles west of Roby or 21 miles east of Snyder on U.S. Highway 180.
