According to Scurry County Museum director Tessa Holladay, scientists from the Lubbock Lake Landmark, the Museum of Texas Tech, and the Scurry County Museum have returned to the Roland Spring Ranch archeological dig site in Scurry County first time in two years.
The Texas Tech paleontology team is excited to be back excavating remains from organisms that lived on the site 2.5 to 3 million years ago. John A. Moretti, research aide at the Museum of Texas Tech, told Holladay that this site is one of 24 in North America with these organisms. When the Roland family bought the ranch in the early 2000s they discovered bones sticking out of a dry bank. In 2004 the Texas Tech Museum began excavation of the site and have been coming back every summer since.
Scurry County Museum facilitates public tours for the museum annually. This summer the tours are on Tuesday, July 3, at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Only 20 spots per hour are available. To reserve a spot call (325) 573-6107 or email scmdirector@snydertex.com .
Those unable to make it to the tour are welcome to attend a lecture by John Moretti at the museum Friday, July 24, at 6 p.m. THe museum is located on the camps of Western Texas College at 6200 College Ave, Snyder, TX 79549.
