On Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at 9:30 a.m., Quanah Parker Trail arrow maker Charles A. Smith installed a Quanah Parker Trail Arrow on the grounds of the Kent County Nursing Home, in Jayton, the county seat.
Kent County has an indisputable claim to a place on the Quanah Parker Trail, which seeks to bring to public attention the history that all 52 counties of the Texas Plains Trail Region share. All were once were included in the territory of the Comanches, once known as “The Comancheria,” from the late 1700s to 1875.
The Comanche Trail coursed through central Kent County. Routes of this trail were mapped by Capt. R. B. Marcy in 1854 and followed by Ranald Mackenzie during his efforts to track down Quanah Parker on the plains of Texas during his 1872 and 1874-75 campaigns.
