The Patton Springs Rangers
squared off against the Motley County Matadors last Thursday night for their first district game of the season. Both teams were accompanied by a lovely cold front that brought snow and ice that made for a numbing game.
The Rangers came ready for a fight, forcing a fumble from the Matadors on the first play of the game, which was snatched by senior Kyle Davis for the Rangers.
But the Matadors showed that they would not be disrespected on their own turf, forcing an interception to get the ball back into their hands.
The Matadors settled in and got to work with their trusted running back Jake Richards, who would be their go-to all night. In the first quarter, Richards rushed for five touchdowns.
The Rangers, desperate for a sign of life, looked to their up-and-coming sophomore Ralph Garza. After a quarter of no answers, Garza would find the end zone during the second quarter with a 30-yard rushing touchdown, the first and only time the Rangers would score.
Despite the Rangers valiant efforts, the Matadors would take home the win after just two quarters, “45ing” the Rangers at the half with a final score of 54-6.
