Dickens County Sheriff Terry Braly provided details on two break-ins in Spur last week, one of which involved theft of a federal agency’s pickup truck from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. The break-in and theft were discovered to morning of Wednesday, April 21.
Braly said that a door to the office in the 300 block of Willard Avenue had been kicked in, and the culprit searched through keys in the office until locating one that would start the truck. Although the abandoned truck was later recovered on the Crosbyton cutoff, no one has yet been apprehended for the theft.
There is a person of interest that law enforcement has their eye on, Braly said, in connection with a similar incident at Star Feed & Seed. Few items of value were taken in that incident; entry was via a locked back door.
On the night of April 22 the sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of trespassing in a vacant house on E. 2nd Street. Braly said he had not received other calls of that nature recently.
Talk among the community of these incidents has been sufficient to prompt a agrass-roots night watch, according to social media, though according to Spur mayor Louise Jones there has been no official reestablishment of any neighborhood watch program.
Citizens are encouraged, as always, to be watchful for criminal activity, said Braly. “Be vigilant and report anything that looks suspicious” even if the matter seems minor, he said.
