SPEC awards Spur an Operation Round Up grant for downtown park enhancements

The City of Spur is among the local recipients of an Operation Round Up grant from South Plains Electric Cooperative, city secretary Nanette Yanez announced last week.

The competitive grant, in the amount of $1,500, will be used to beautify downtown’s Rickels Park, a popular gathering spot for school and community use as well as a shady, restful spot along Burlington Avenue. For those unfamiliar, the park’s official name honors the longtime automobile dealership that used to occupy a nearby lot. It’s located at the southwest corner of Third and Burlington next door to the Spur Ex-Students Association.

Yanez said that ideas had already begun to come in regarding specific improvements the public would like to see. Mayor Louise Jones will be considering a way to solicit input.

“The City of Spur would like to thank South Plains Electric Cooperative, Inc., for the $1,500 grant through Operation Roundup,” she said.
