Despite icy weather that nearly crippled parts of Texas— including Austin, where the Texas Historical Commission’s Real Places conference wasbeingheld—Spur’s Harry Bob Martin and others from West Texas made it to the capital city for presentation of the THC’s top service award to a county historical commission chair.
Martin, a Dickens CHC appointee since 1999 and chair since 2003, received the John Ben Shepperd County Historical Commission Leadership Award.Itwasamongthe dozen awards presented by THC chairman John L. Nau III.
Present for the awards dinner were several members of Martin’s family: his wife, Mary Lena Martin, who has served as secretary of the Dickens CHC since 1999 as well; and daughters Carol of Bronte and Casey of Wichita Falls.
Dickens County Judge Kevin Brendle was also in attendance, and Barbara Brannon and Kay Ellington of Spur participated in the full conference day as well as the awards dinner.
