Spur traveled to Vernon Northside last Friday night to play their second in-district game. The Bulldogs came out on top, ending the game early with a score of 588. This makes Spur 2-0 in district, with one game to complete the season.
Starting the action off for the Bulldogs off in the first quarter was #22 Cory Hamilton, who ran the ball for a 6-yard touchdown; #25 Kayden Martinez’s kick failed. The Indians responded, scoring quickly. The quarter ended speedily with the Bulldogs trailing 6-8.
The Bulldogs came out in the second quarter ready to play. Hamilton scored with a 2-yard touchdown and Martinez’s kick was good, bringing the score to 148. The Bulldogs and Indians played a great defensive game in the rain. #28 Ryan Davis would score the next two touchdowns with a total of 37 yards, and Martinez made both kicks as well, ending the first half with Spur on top 30-8.
With the rain slowing down a bit, the third quarter was all Spur. Davis scored two touchdowns with a total of 51 yards, and Hamilton scored two touchdowns with a total of 96 yards. Martinez made two of the three kicks. The game would end in the third quarter due to the mercy rule, with a final score of 58-8.
The Bulldogs “struggled in the wet conditions in the first quarter but figured out how to make it work,” said head coach Tate Clark said. “Defense played a great game, only giving up one or two big plays the entire game.”
The win brings Spur to the final regular season game this next week. The Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs, and the final game of the season will be a battle with Knox City for the District title. Friday at Jones Stadium will also be senior night, when Spur ISD will recognize its senior football, cross country, and cheerleader participants and their parents.
The Bulldogs encourages fans to come out and support the Bulldogs as they battle for the District championship.
