On Thursday, September 17, the Spur fifth grade social studies classes presented a Constitution Day program in the Dog Dome auditorium. The entire school attended.
On September 17, 1787, the Founding Fathers of this nation signed the U.S. Constitution. For the past 233 years, the Constitution has served as the supreme law of the land. The Constitution, along with the Bill of Rights and other amendments, define our government and guarantee our rights.
Each year, on September 17, Americans celebrate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. People who are taking steps to become U.S. citizens are recognized on this day. In addition, September 17–23 is also recognized as Constitution Week. During this time, schools are encouraged to have students, as Americans, reflect on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and what it means to be a U.S. citizen.
The fifth graders presented a brief history on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Since this is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, they also told about the Women’s Suffrage movement and staged two puppet shows in which they told about some of its leaders.
Spur teacher Pat Hightower received a grant from the Community Foundation of West Texas to support this programming.
