The Spur ISD 5th grade class, along with a few members of the high school’s National Honor Society, held a Veterans Day Program for the school and community Friday, Nov. 10, in the school auditorium.
The Spur High School Band started the program by playing the national anthem. The students worked together and presented the history of Veterans Day. Each student read a piece of information, and then presented a more personal piece of information. Students who had a family member serving our country addressed thank-you letters to the family member and all who served or serving.
Following the personal notes, David Pafford, the father of 5th grader Caleb Pafford, discussed his job in the Air Force. Pafford spoke about the B-1 bombers that were flown during his time of service. The students were engaged with his presentation and asked great questions following his speech. Thank you, Mr. Pafford, for taking the time to present to our students andcommunity—and thank you for your service.
To conclude the service, JD Hamilton, a member of the Spur High School Band, played Taps to dismiss the attendees.
A reception was held in the commons area for all veterans in attendance. The veterans were presented with handwritten thankyou cards from the 5th graders. Invenergy, whose regional office is located in Dickens County, provided cake and a blanket for each veteran. The table arrangements and cookies were made by the Spur Culinary Arts Class and FCS classes, to put the final touches on recognizing the veterans at the reception.
Megan Hammack, 5th grade history teacher, said, “I am thankful for the opportunity to carry on the celebration Mrs. Hightower started. I am thankful for all the veterans. I am grateful for my student’s dad being willing to share a part of his life during the program. I am also thankful for all of Spur students willing to participate in the program to make it a success.”
The school thanks all who attended the service, and offers a special thankyou to all the veterans for serving our country. “You all are greatly appreciated,” said Mrs. Hammack.
