Spur 5th graders tour city sites to learn about Bill of Rights

“Let’s Celebrate the Bill of Rights and Voting Rights Amendments” was the theme of Mrs. Pat Hightower’s 5thgrade social studies project at Spur Elementary School this spring.

As part of the project, which was supported by a mini-grant from the Community Foundation of West Texas, students created booklets illustrating the U.S. Bill of Rights and voting rights amendments by taking pictures of local places and people and pairing them up with definitions of the amendments.

On February 28, students toured City Hall and the Spur Police Department, then stopped into the Texas Spur newspaper office to learn about First Amendment rights, including freedom of speech and the press.

At the newspaper office, students were shown examples of printing technology from letterpress to digital, and given copies of the newspaper and the text of the Bill of Rights.
