Spur Area Chamber of Commerce hosts 4th of July Parade, National Night Out

Despite the challenges

posed when businesses had to close or scale back during the pandemic, the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce has carried out a robust slate of community activities, and during 2022 even added a big one.

Spur hadn’t held a 4th of July parade in recent memory, but with a small committee headed up by Chamber members Janet Bridges and Gracie Hadding, the group pulled off an inspiring celebration on Monday, July 4.

At its regular meeting of August 15, Hadding provided a full report on the event. She thanked those who helped coordinate the parade and contribute to its success.

The list included Janet Bridges, Gracie Hadding and Gayle Massaro, who bought decorations for the Veterans float; Richard Bridges, J.C. Emerson, Gayle Massaro, Martha Pickens, Connie Rainbolt, who helped decorate the float, and Emerson and Rainbolt, who pulled it; Janet Bridges and Gayle Massaro for providing flyers and promotions; J.C. Emerson and·Richard Bridges, who helped identift and recruit local veterans and provided advice on how to display flags; Barbara Brannon and Kay Ellington of The Texas Spur for sharing information; City of Spur employees for removing flags after the event.

Thanks also went to those who provided prize money for parade entries; to Spur Mayor Louise for providing contact info for veterans, and other help and advice; to Police Chief Billy Spears for planning the route and leading the parade; to Officer Taylor Howerton, for providing rear escort; and to Matt McArthur for cooking hot dogs in the park after the parade.

“A special thank you to all who participated in making the parade a success,” said Hadding.

Members present at the meeting were Janet Bridges, Richard Bridges, Steve Bridges, J.C. Emerson, Gracie Hadding, Taylor Howerton, Matt McArthur, Martha Pickens, and Connie Rainbolt. Two visitors from Mortenson Construction, Keke Wright and Chris Chappell.

Another recent activity of the Chamber was National Night Out, held Tuesday, Aug. 2, in Rickels Park as a comeand- go event. The Chamber cooked and served 40 hamburgers and 60 hot dogs to participants of all ages.

Several popular activities are coming up this fall. Trunk or Treat is tentatively planned for Saturday, Oct. 29, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on the south side of the Lawrence Brothers grocery store on Burlington Avenue in Spur.

Late Night Shopping is traditionally held in early December, and Chamber members will poll downtown businesses regarding the best night to hold the event.

In other business, the Chamber is soliciting nominations by text, email, or other method, for 2022–23 officers and directors.
