Team of Hamilton, Ortiz set school record with a perfect score in 3rd round
On Saturday October 7, one of Spur’s debate teams competed in a meet held in Muleshoe. The meet involved nine teams in total, representing 1A up to 6A in classification.
Spur’s team of Joshua Ortiz and Allee Hamilton, coached by Myles Hammack, debatedthreerounds in the morning, followed by semifinals and then finals.
In the first three rounds, Hamilton and Ortiz faced Odessa Permian (3rd team), Hereford, and Odessa Permian (4th team), besting all three teams. In the third round, the Spur duo scored a thirty, a perfect score. This set history for them and the school. The team needed a 2-1 record to make semifinals, and Hamilton and Ortiz were advancing with a 3-0 record going into the semis. They faced Odessa Permian (2nd team) in the semifinals and won, qualifying them for finals.
In the final round, Spur debated against Borden County, winning the round with votes from all three judges.
Hamilton and Ortiz went 5-0 in the meet, bringing home the gold medal.
