TheSpurtraveledtoMatador for week three of the 2022 football preseason. The Bulldogs and Matadors have been a great matchup for several years. Spur Bulldogs came out on top with the score of 77–28, finishing early in the 4th quarter due to the mercy rule.
Motley County started out strong in the first quarter by scoring the first touchdown of the game followed by an extra point, making the score 8-0. The Bulldogs responded quickly with #28 Ryan Davis running back the kickoff and putting six points on the board. #11 Gunnir Bateman’s conversion pass to #21 JD Hamilton was good, making the score 8-7. Motley County scored again late in the first quarter to make the score 7-16.
The Bulldogs began to find their groove after Motley County scored in the second quarter. This would be the one and only touchdown given up by the Bulldog Defense in the 2nd quarter. #22 Cory Hamilton scored the next three touchdowns, with a total 129 yards, and #25 Kayden Martinez’ extra points were all good! The Bulldogs worked their way back to the top with the score of 31-22 at halftime.
Returning from halftime, the Bulldogs came out strong. Cory Hamilton ran 59 yards for a Bulldog touchdown with #25 Kayden Martinez kicking the extra point to start the quarter off well. The Bulldog defense took the field and held the Matadors on downs, energizing the team. Cory Hamilton ran for 66 yards for the second touchdown of the quarter and again, Kayden Martinez completed the extra points with another good kick. The Matadors, still fighting, were able to score one last touchdown before being shut out. The Bulldogs jumped back in with a completed pass from Cory Hamilton to #15 Jaxen Zarate for a 38-yard Bulldog touchdown. The extra points were good by a kick from #25 Kayden Martinez. To end the 3rd quarter, Ryan Davis ran for 32 yards for the last touchdown of the quarter. Extra points by Kayden Martinez were good, finalizing the 3rd quarter score of 63-28.
Quick into the 4th quarter, Cory Hamilton ran for a 65-yard touchdown for the Bulldogs. Kayden Martinez stuck the extra points, making the score 71-28. To seal the deal, a Motley County pass intended for a teammate was intercepted by #6 Ace Walker and returned for the final Bulldog touchdown. The final score 77-28.
Head coach Tate Clark said, “I felt like when we finally locked in and started playing, we showed what we could do. It is allowing us to build some depth, and I think it will benefit us playing into the 4th and more games this year.”
Next week, the Bulldogs face a tough #1-ranked team, Westbrook on its home turf at Jones Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
